H1N1 Influenza Vaccine Page

We have begun giving the H1N1 vaccine in our office. Our office has received a very limited supply of two of the five types of vaccine (The mist and the multi-dose, injectable vials.).

The five types of  Influenza A (H1N1) Monovalent Vaccine are:

  • 1. Nasal-Spray ,Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine [LAIV]

  • 2. Injectable, multi-dose vial which contains thimerosal

  • 3. Injectable, single dose, preservative free vials-0.25 ml

  • 4. Injectable, single dose, preservative free vials-0.5 ml

  • 5. Injectable, single dose, preservative free pre-filled syringe, 0.5ml

As of today, November 3, we have not received any preservative-free vaccine. We have set up some H1N1 FluMist Clinics for November 9th and 12th. Please call for availability. We will schedule more when more vaccine arrives.

Some parents have expressed concern over the safety of this vaccine. The same manufacturers who produce seasonal flu vaccines are producing 2009 H1N1 vaccines for use in the United States and the vaccines are being made in the same way that the seasonal vaccines are made. There has also been some concern about Thimerosal, the preservative used with the multi-dose vials of vaccine. Click here for more information about thimerosal.

The acquisition of the H1N1 vaccine by our office is a completely different process than all of our other vaccines including seasonal flu vaccine. We began the process at the earliest possible time as far as submitting requests for the vaccine. As you may know, we had to request H1N1 vaccine from the government and not from the manufacturer. We requested as much vaccine as possible given our patient population.  We periodically receive notices from the government when more vaccine is available to order and we respond as quickly as possible. The time which we receive the order is extremely variable.
